In the case of the Navarrese territory, in recent years research into the Roman roads that crossed the region has advanced considerably. Thus, the brief references that we find in Greco-Latin writings, such as the Geography of Strabo, by Claudius Ptolemy, the anonymous one known as “Itinerary of Antoninus” and the also anonymous “Cosmographer of Ravenna” or Ravenate , have been complemented with various findings archaeological and epigraphic, such as the road sections discovered in the Navarrese sites of Santa María de Zamartze, in Uharte Arakil (Valle de Taraz Arce and Zaldua, in Auritz – Burguete (Mendiznumerous milestones that have been appearing in different parts of the province, such as in Santacara, Arellano, Artajona or Santa Criz de Eslava, among others. However, a large part of the road layout from Roman times is unknown to us today. This is due to the possibility that several viae fell into disuse, that part of their layout was modified or that they were subsequently reused, thus altering their appearance and hiding or destroying the stratigraphic levels belonging to the Ancient period.

Likewise, the investigation has been hampered by the erroneous identification of certain road sections from more modern times as Roman by some researchers and scholars. On some occasions, these statements BTC Users Number Data have taken root in popular culture and have been endorsed by public administrations, such is the case of the “Calzada de Iguste”. Camino de Iguste: the origin Throughout the 20th century, several academic publications attributed a Roman origin to the paved road of Iguste, a road that descends from Alto de Guirguillano towards the town of Cirauqui. Sometimes the stone bridge with a single arch that is preserved in said town and a section of the Camino de Santiago that leaves from the town towards Estella-Lizarra have also been described as Roman. Specifically, these roads have tended to be identified as part of the route that supposedly linked the civitas of Graccurris (Alfaro, La Rioja) with that of Pompelo (Pamplona) and that crossed the mansions of Beldalin , Ergavica and Bitouris , according to the already mentioned “anonymous cosmographer of Ravenna” (4.43), a work that must be interpreted with great care due to its late writing, its anonymous nature and the anachronisms, typos, corruptions and gaps present throughout the text.

The lack of consensus when it comes to locating Beldalin , Ergavica and Bitouris and the scarcity of archaeological remains regarding the aforementioned road have led researchers to propose several alternatives for its layout. Thus, one of these hypotheses points out the possibility that, starting from Graccurris , this road could go up the Arga River valley passing through Andelo (Muruzabal de Andion) and then enter the Pamplona basin through Cirauqui and Guirguillano. It has also been suggested that a road could run through this point that would link the Pamplona region with Viana (Pérez de Laborda, 1985; Cañada Palacio, Unzuuste, graphic evidence and materials from the Roman period, which, as archaeologist Mikel Ramos points out, have frequently been considered the most decisive data: “several sections of cobbled roads that have traditionally been dated as Roman (Cirauqui, Estella and Barbarin) ”.
